I was searching for a hotel to stay in. I live in Chicago but I will be booking a hotel room for a party. I searched different websites of different hotels in chicago and discovered that the rates were really high. Then I searched on yahoo and got rates from different companies where I could book the same hotel room for half the price. Is this legitimate? if so..how is it possible?

The reasons why the prices are high is become some companies have a booking fee. Example - hotel.com and yahoo.com. Priceline.com however is one of the few sites that don’t charge any extra costs. It’s all legal.

Also keep in mind that sometimes a website will only have a set number of rooms that they can get. For instance, I went to Sams Town in Las Vegas.
Booked through Hotels.com but, it was booked for the wrong day. When I called Hotels.com they had no more rooms available in that hotel at their prices. I could still get a room at that hotel, just not through Hotels.com.
Orbitz, Hotels.com, Yahoo these are all legitimite sometimes I think they negotiate with the hotels, which is why they have different prices…some have booking fees as well.

Yes, they are legit. As mentioned, they usually are able to offer a discount due to a negotiated rate with the hotel chain. This ensures that the hotel can fill the most rooms possible, since empty rooms don’t generate restaurant sales, spa treatments etc. Many hotels now have ‘low rate guarantees’ meaning they will match or beat any rate you can find on line. It is often best to call the hotel directly and ask for their best price. Don’t forget to mention it if you are a member of AAA, Sam’s club, AARP, etc. as that can get you a better rate sometimes as well.
